Finding Cheap Car Insurance
If you drive a car on the roads in the UK, you are legally obliged to have car insurance. We cannot do without it and that means that some drivers still have their policy with the same car insurance company that they have always had, perhaps since passing their driving test at age seventeen or so.
Keeping your car insurance with one company could be a good idea in some respects. After all, you may well have built up a No Claims Bonus. Even if you haven't, you can often get a discount for renewing your car insurance as they compete to stop you taking your business elsewhere. However, you should not take it for granted that your best idea is to stay with the same car insurance company.
Whatever your driving record or whatever car you drive, there are some steps you can take to get cheap car insurance.
Shop around
The first thing you should do when you want to renew your car insurance is to shop around. The UK car insurance industry is incredibly competitive so there are often good deals to be had from insurance companies keen to lure your business away from your existing
car insurance company. You can even use these deals as leverage, to negotiate lower prices and better packages with other car insurance companies.
Check out the insurance company
One warning, though: when you are looking for
cheap car insurance, you must make sure that the company with whom you take out a policy is a reputable one and will be able to work on your behalf and pay out any clams which are necessary. If you don't ensure that, you will be wasting your money in taking out car insurance with them.
Weigh up the excess and premiums
Whenever you make a claim on your car insurance, you will have to pay an 'excess' charge. That means that whatever the bill on your insurance you will need to pay a certain amount: for instance the first £50. Often, people take things at face value and opt for car insurance that only charges a small excess fee, thinking they will save money that way.
However, this strategy can end up costing you money. Think about it, most people don't have many car accidents, so they can't benefit from a low excess fee. But if they opt for a car insurance policy with a slightly higher excess fee, you can often lower your premium significantly.
Car insurance on multiple vehicles
If your household owns more than one vehicle, you can often lower your insurance costs by insuring several vehicles with one company.
All these are efficient ways to reduce the costs of your car insurance, so don't just take the first quote you're given or stick with your old insurance company without giving it further thought.
